Rara Lake in western Nepal

Ram Krishna Shahi, a valued and dear friend of this column, sent us this stunning pic after his trek in the summer to Rara Lake in western Nepal. A sought-after destination by serious travel warriors, Rara is the biggest and deepest fresh water lake in the Nepal Himalayas. Needing guides and two weeks worth of food and kit, the lake is no easy trek, but surrounded by a national park of spruce, pine and juniper, and with snow-capped peaks as a back-drop, the reward has been described as ‘heaven on earth’
